Construction

Knife construction

Whittle tang & moulded plastic handle

Number1 The blade is forced into the slot in the moulded handle, which forms a secure friction fit. An alternative method is to mould a plastic handle directly on to the whittle tang blade.

Neb tang & moulded plastic handle

Number2 The neb tang blade is inserted into the slot in the moulded handle, where compression rivets are used to to hold the blade firmly in place.

Full tang & moulded plastic handle

Number3 The full tang blade runs the full length of the handle. The two halves of the handle (scales) are rivetted tightly to the blade.

Full tang with stainless steel

Number4 The full tang blade is welded between two stainless steel pressings, which are then smoothed.

Forged blade & bolster

Number5 The blade, bolster and tang are forged from the solid steel. The plastic handle is moulded directly onto the bolster. The handle is then usually hand finished back to the metal. This construction is traditionally combined with a full tang, rivets and scales.
